Why do people steal shopping carts?

I saw a couple in a minivan put a shopping cart into the back of it tonight. I asked them what they were doing and they said they needed it to get soda they had bought, which is ridiculous because obviously there are a lot more carts inside the store (and outside).

They got mad, took the cart out and drove away.

I wish I knew why they were trying to steal it!
