Pret-a-Manger was created in 1983 solely by Jeffrey Hyman. Hyman's sister, Valerie, came up with the name and was the company secretary, and Hyman's partner was also involved. Hyman's sandwich shop fell into liquidation, and the name, logo, and concept were then purchased by two businessmen, Julian Metcalfe and Sinclair Beecham, who formed a new company and took the sandwich shop to the global brand it became. However, the company has gone to some considerable effort to wash the humble beginnings out of the Pret-a-Manger story.
Jeffrey Hyman went on to create the Food & Drink Innovation Network. He died in 2017 at the age of 67.
