When temperatures start to fall newly-mated queen bumble bees look for a sheltered place where they can hibernate until spring. The rest of the colony dies when they get too cold.
In the following spring the queens will come out of hibernation, find a new nest site and start building the nest, and start laying eggs and producing the new season's bumble bees.
