FDR called the US The Arsenal of Democracy. Manufacturing plants were at work twenty-four hours a day. Civilian industries were converted to making arms, munitions, tanks, airplanes, and ships. Virtually everyone who was not in the military had full-time job and worked overtime hours. Even movie theaters remained open around the clock in major cities to accommodate defense plant workers who worked the late shift. Except for shortages in rubber, gasoline, meat, sugar, and housing, the wartime economy boomed.
