What is a condon and what is each condon code for?

A codon is a sequence of three nucleotides in DNA or RNA that corresponds to a specific amino acid or a stop signal during protein synthesis. There are 64 possible codons, with 61 coding for amino acids and 3 serving as stop codons, which signal the termination of protein synthesis. Each amino acid may be encoded by more than one codon, a phenomenon known as degeneracy. The genetic code is nearly universal, meaning it is the same in most organisms.
