Why does holly leaves have less prickles the higher up the tree you go?

Prickles on the bush are there to prevent herbivores from eating the leaf.

And so as you go up the tree there are less herbivores grazing the leaves so the tree needs less prickles to prevent themselves being eaten.

This is the reason why there are less prickes higher up the tree you go.
