In World War I, the major combatant that dropped out of the war for all practical fighting purposes in 1917 was Russia. Wracked by internal revolution and exhausted from the war-effort, Russia soon made a formal peace with its enemies in early 1918 and then concentrated on the bitter civil war still being waged throughout its expansive territory.
