The red-shouldered hawk primarily inhabits wooded areas, including forests, swamps, and riparian zones across North America. They are commonly found in the eastern United States, parts of the Midwest, and along the Pacific Coast. These hawks prefer habitats with open spaces for hunting and abundant trees for nesting and perching. In winter, some populations migrate south to warmer regions, while others remain in their breeding territories.
