Mátyás Rákosi was a Hungarian communist politician who served as the General Secretary of the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party from 1945 to 1956. He played a key role in establishing a Stalinist regime in Hungary after World War II, implementing policies that led to political repression and economic hardship. Rákosi's leadership was marked by purges of political opponents and a strong alignment with the Soviet Union. He was eventually removed from power in 1956 during the Hungarian Revolution and subsequently exiled.
