How do you speed up wireless internet on Windows 8?

I had Windows 8 Wi-Fi crawling at 2 Mbps. Fixed it by updating the driver, disabling auto-updates for apps, and switching from 2.4GHz → 5GHz. Feels like I finally upgraded to fiber!
