The were a bit larger than normal size wolf, ranging in weight from about 110 lbs to 174 lbs. The Dire Wolf also had shorter front legs then today's wolf. The did hunt in packs, but brain wise was not suppose to be as intelligent as current wolves.
Dire wolves were actually around 24 inches at the shoulder, which is around the Mexican wolves' height (the Mexican wolf is the smallest gray wolf). Dire wolves made up for their short stature in weight.
they where around the size of a small bear, making them large enough to hunt prehistoric buffalo and horses
