They can smoke or not smoke, they can be shy or outgoing, they like most people they come in contact with and they are no different than the rest of the Westernized world.

I think, is is not an essential nature of Asian guys to be shy. Maybe the symbolic meanings in relationship with other ethnic girls makes them uneasy. Actually, the idea behind romantic love is a framework referring to the role-model of brother and sister. It do not work with different ethnicities. So you can be sure, that the meaning you are investing in interracial relationship can not be regarded as the natural thing. I am the opinion that make the people feel uncomfortable, because they know that they are under the gaze of the invisible majority. Certainly, everyone will understand, that the behaviour is more clumsy, if there are unknown curious eyes out there.
Another aspect is that the Asian did not create an energetic street culture like other ethnicities, street culture are very body-centered, it teach you to love the gaze of other people. Actually, Asian adapt the habits of the middle-class and surround their efforts on written culture.
If you have a fear of public speaking, you will probably be shy to talk to strangers, especially of the opposite sex. You don't have to be Asian to be shy.

Ha I know from personal experience that is so the case. Well, it's not the all Asian guys are 'shy' it's just most of them come from a 'very' conservative background. I should know since I'm Asian-filipino to be exact. Most Asian parents generally discourage both Asian guy && girls from dating throughout highschool because they want us to focus on our grades. And trust me, they nag you like hell. So that's half the reason why Asian guys are don't date period. The reason they're so shy? Again, it's their culture. Asian parents bring up their sons to be formal and to treat a girl with respect. And let's face it, in our generation, not many girls want respect anymore. They want a guy that has alot of self cofidence and a big ego. Girls like guys that take control and you have to admit, freaky. Where as Asian guys would mostly let the girl make all the moves because they're afraid they will do something wrong. Well just opinion of it. Plus, I've seen alot of Asian dramas:taiwanese/Japanese/Korean and even the 'tough' guys are shy when trying to kiss the girl.
Totally agree with everyone here... Asians are witty when talking to girls online or over the phone, but can't put two Words together when confronted with a girl they like.
Considering I am a Mexican/German girl who only dates Asian guys, I should highly disagree. All of my boyfriends have been openly able to talk to me, ask me to go places with them etc etc. I'm actually more of the shy one. I mean sure there will always be some people in the world, no matter the race, who will be so shy they don't want to talk to the person they like. I myself am an example of that. I can tell you from personal experience though, the shy Asian guys always are some of the cutest. I won't start ranting about them though, because I could go on for ages. xD
But some advice to you Asian guys out there, take it a step by step. :]
Get to know the person you like, be a good friend to them but don't get so close you're afraid to discuss anything about romance with them. Trust your gut feeling even if it doesn't work out. Take my boyfriend for example, since I won't say his first name I'll call him J Dinh. He's 3/4 viet and 1/4 Chinese and he told me he felt that I would never say yes to dating him because he thought that Mexican girls didn't like asians. Boy was he relieved when I told him I only date asians! But to the point everyone gets shy at one point, it's part of life! So get out there and have some fun.
Well, as an Asian all i have to do is agree with pia. Like her i am filipino, and i guess I'm shy but she has all the points. Parents worry about their kids education so i guess we aren't very 'sociable' but doesn't mean i don't have friends.
Its not just asian guys. I mean everybody can be shy. Especially in front of the one they are crushing on. I am an asian guy and used to be shy because i figured hey no one likes asians then i figured out its not about that its about being able to treat the girl right and show them that they are special and the only one for you. I just got out of an amazing relationship because the girl thought i cheated on her when all her friends and my friends told her i would never cheat. Then a girl tells her i did and she breaks up with me after telling me im adorable and super sweet. It just depends on the situation and the guy
