Why did the wind monkeys harm dorthy?

In "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," the Wind Monkeys, also known as the Winged Monkeys, harm Dorothy as part of their service to the Wicked Witch of the West. The Witch commands them to capture Dorothy and her dog, Toto, in order to retrieve the powerful silver shoes she possesses.
