The name Mumtaz is fairly common in Muslim countries like Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Turkey and Malaysia. It's definition arises from the Arabic form of the Word as "well distinguished", as in distinguished or recognized in society. Its use is mainly double-gendered. Although, it was most common for Muslim men, it became common to women as well later on.
The popularity of the name "Mumtaz" increased significantly after the death of the wife of the Indian Mughal King/Emperor Shah Jahan [India - Mughal Empire], after which the Taj Mahal was erected, in her memory.
