What is homocercal tail?

A homocercal tail is a type of tail fin found in many bony fish, characterized by having symmetrical lobes on either side of the vertebral column. This design allows for efficient propulsion and maneuverability in the water, as both upper and lower lobes provide lift and thrust. In contrast to heterocercal tails, where the upper lobe is larger and extends beyond the vertebrae, homocercal tails are typically more streamlined, facilitating smoother swimming.
