Paton makes a lot of allusions to The Bible in his book Cry, the Beloved Country. Absalom's request for his son to be named Peter is an allusion to Peter, a disciple of Christ who was known for denying knowing Christ after he was arrested. When Christ was resurrected, Peter renewed his allegiance to him and the Gospel.

This can be compared with Absalom's mistakes in the book (namely, the murder of Arthur Jarvis) and his turning away from God. Naming his son Peter symbolizes his apology and repentance to his father, Stephen.

Hope that helps.
