After King Leonidas I of Sparta was killed at the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC, his body was initially left on the battlefield as a symbol of defiance against the Persian forces. The Persians reportedly mutilated his corpse, but later, according to historical accounts, his body was retrieved by the Spartans. It was then honored with a proper burial, and a monument was erected at the site to commemorate his bravery and sacrifice.
