Mei Xiang, the giant panda, was given to the United States in 2000 as part of a conservation and breeding program between the Chinese government and the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington, D.C. She arrived at the zoo on December 6, 2000. Mei Xiang has since become a significant part of the zoo's efforts to promote awareness and conservation of endangered species.
