Alberto Santos-Dumont is often credited with flying the first heavier-than-air aircraft in Europe, notably his 14-bis, which made a public flight in 1906. However, the Wright brothers, Orville and Wilbur, achieved powered flight earlier in 1903 with the Wright Flyer in the United States. While Santos-Dumont's contributions to aviation are significant, he did not fly first; the Wright brothers hold that distinction.
