Before Babylon, the Sumerian civilization was the dominant cultural and political entity in Mesopotamia. The Sumerians, known for their advancements in writing, architecture, and governance, established city-states such as Ur, Uruk, and Eridu around 3500 BCE. Following the Sumerians, the Akkadian Empire, founded by Sargon of Akkad around 2334 BCE, unified much of Mesopotamia and is considered one of the first empires in history.
