Who invented the telephone and why is its useful?

Alexander Graham Bell is credited with the invention of the telephone. The telephone was extremely useful because it allowed communication over long distances. It was superior to the telegraph because anyone could use it, whereas the telegraph took quite a bit of learning to memorize and understand Morse Code.
