The pigs represent the Communists. Old Mayor represent a combination of Marx and Lenin, Napoleon represent Stalin and Snowball represent Trotsky and the Mensheviks. George Orwell was an anticommunist socialist, and a theme of the novel is how the authoritarian communists in the end betray the original socialist values (also emphasized in 1984).
