The sailboat is the give-way vessel when it is overtaken by a motorboat or when it is on a collision course with a motorboat that is restricted in its ability to maneuver. Additionally, if the sailboat is on a port tack and encounters a starboard-tack motorboat, the sailboat must also give way. In general, power-driven vessels are considered to have the right of way over sailing vessels in most situations.
