What does birds in general symbolize?

I heard recently, in church, that they represent evil, or something bad that would happen. For example in the dream Joseph interrupted while in jail. The bird eating someone's food meant that they were going to die.

Birds symbolize different things in different cultures. Within a single culture, specific birds of different species may have completely opposite meanings. In some cultures, birds in general may symbolize spirits, or spiritual messengers.
