Chinua Achebe hoped to show the culture of the people in Nigeria, as well as the impact of European influence to the indigenous tribes.

Achebe wished to show that the culture of Nigeria was deep and meaningful and parallels with European culture; it should not be simply dismissed as a backwards African culture, but seen as one rich with stories and teachings.
