What is a standing headline?

The headline of the story does not aim to give the gist of the story (as in a news article) but to advertise the material. Therefore, an elaborate headline is not suitable, for features are usually concerned with simple subjects.

Some special forms or arrangement of type is used to give variety in page makeup and to call attention to feature material. For example, if the regular headline contains dark, condensed type, the feature headline will be set in thin-faced, standard or extended-letter or italics. Often only one or two lines used across the top of the story. The heading may also be set off with surrounding lines (a box). Sometimes, the entire story is boxed or it is set in a double-column type.
