Typewriters use an inked ribbon which the keys hit against the paper, thus imprinting each letter on the page.

Typewriter ribbons are available from your local newsagent usually. Typewriter ribbons can come in plain black, or combinations such as black, red and green. The two knobs or wheels on either side of the key semicircle hold the ribbon and wind it one way or the other as typewriter ribbons will usually reverse direction once they get to the end as there is more than enough ink in them to cycle through them just once.
