A few terms describe this trait depending on the emphasis placed on certain aspects of the story.

  • Closing by Return. This term is usually used with essays where the conclusion 'returns' to restate the thesis and answer it.
  • 'Tying up Loose Ends' a informal term which emphasizes the fact that all conflicts have to be adequately 'dealt with' or the story is unfulfilling.
  • Home Coming. Where the character literally return to where the story began. A good example of this is The Lord of the Ring.
  • Cyclic Novel or Story. A specialist term for 'time paradox' stories where the characters are forced to repeat exactly the same events over and over again.
