Marie Maynard Daly lived from April 16, 1921, to October 28, 2003. She was an influential American biochemist and the first African American woman to earn a Ph.D. in chemistry in the United States, completing her degree in 1947. Daly's work spanned much of the 20th century, during which she made significant contributions to the understanding of cholesterol and hypertension.
