What medications are given for schizophrenia?

Anti-psychotics- there are two different classes typical, and atypical. Often psychiatric APRNs and physicians will work with the patient to determine what medications work best, dose etc to try and minimize their side effects.

Atypical- are newer, less side effects

• Risperidone (Risperdal)
• Olanzapine (Zyprexa)
• Quetiapine (Seroquel)
• Ziprasidone (Geodon)
• Aripiprazole (Abilify)
• Paliperidone (Invega)

Typical- older, more side effects bot often more cheaper

• Chlorpromazine (Thorazine)
• Haloperidol (Haldol)
• Perphenazine (generic only)
• Fluphenazine (generic only)
