Up UNTIL the time of the Vietnam War (1960's), the French Foreign Legion was noted for consisting of former fighting men from other countries; especially "un-employed" fighting men from other nations. Officially or unofficially, the French Foreign Legion's primary concern was it's allegiance to France and the Legion. The man's back-ground was of little concern; former Nazis may well have been in the Legion, it has always been rumored as such. If it was so, the Legionnaire kept it to himself, and dedicated his remaining life to the Legion.
