The Catholic Church instituted the process of canonization long after the time of Saint James. A saint is any person in heaven, whether or not formally recognized or canonized. Saint James the Greater was an Apostle of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the early Church widely regarded him among the earliest saints. Acts 12:2 recalls his martyrdom.
