How can ears tell you from which direction sound is coming?

Ears can determine the direction of sound through a process called binaural hearing. Our brain analyzes differences in the time it takes for sound to reach each ear, known as interaural time difference (ITD), as well as differences in sound intensity between the ears, known as interaural level difference (ILD). Additionally, the shape of the outer ear affects how sounds are filtered based on their direction, providing further cues. By integrating all this information, the brain can pinpoint the source of the sound.
