What events lead to the ending of world war 2?

The ending of WW II has to be examined on two fronts, the European and the Japanese. In Europe, the massive invasion of Normandy Beach in northern France by the Allied forces was the beginning of the end for the Third Reich. In Japan, the use of nuclear weapons against Japan led to their rapid surrender.
