The name Pterosaurs, often referred to as pterodactyls existed from the late Triassic to the end of the Cretaceous period (220 to 65.5 million years ago). They included the very small Nernicolopterus to the largest known flying creatures of all time, including Quetzalcoatlus and Hatzegopteryx. See the related links for more information.

However, technically the pterosaurs were not dinosaurs but a separate group of reptiles. The first known true dinosaur to fly was archeopteryx, the earliest known bird.
