There are many types of arthritis but the pain normally comes from damage that is being caused to the joints. Why does joint damage cause pain? If the joint is red, hot, or swollen it is inflamed and painful. If it is not inflamed the pain comes from signals sent by damaged tiny nerves around the joint which send pain signals to the brain. Most doctors are unaware of this and don't understand why anti-inflammatory

and narcotic drugs don't work, yet nerve pain drugs like duloxetine,

pregabalin,

gabapentin

and capsaicin

often work well. You do not have to have inflammation to have a painful joint.
