What problems led the crusades to fail?

One thing that led the Crusaders to fail was their army, and Peter the Hermit. Since Peter the Hermit had no experience with his army, he had failed and he did not succeed. As more people joined his army, more food became scarce. Soon after, many people died when fighting and some were even left as prisoners.
