How do vets use X-rays?

X-rays are technically the beams of electrons used to make the image; the actual image you see (the black and white picture) is called a radiograph. Veterinarians use radiographs to observe the bones and soft tissue structures inside a patient without performing surgery to visualize it. Most commonly, radiographs are used to determine whether a bone is broken.
