What does it mean when the nines receive bikes in the giver?

i got this from the book. Ch.6 page 41.

'' the bicycle, at nine, would be the powerful emblem of moving grafually out into the community, away from the protective family unit.'' It is another step toward independence from the family unit and a sign of impending maturity.
