Gorillas are large, strong apes (twice as heavy and four times as strong as a human) with powerful jaws and long canines. If pushed, they will use these adaptations to defend themselves. However, gorillas, like all animals, prefer to end a confrontation without fighting so as to minimize potential injury to themselves. Often a gorilla's primary means of defense constitutes a 'mere' fist-pounding display and bluff charge.
