You already have service can you use a direct TV box that you got from a friend?

Yes, you can as long as he OWNS it and did NOT lease it. There is a ID number on the back of the box. You have to call Direct TV and see if it was owned or leased. If it was leased that means the box really belongs to Direct TV. If they determine that he owned the receiver box you will have to buy a NEW CARD from them but the box will be yours. They WILL not and I mean WILL not let you use his or anyone's card. The card is 20.00 and you have no choice believe me, I just went through this. For some reason, even if you own the box they do charge a 4.95 monthly fee and when it is listed on your bill it will say lease price. I don't know why because I own my box but they will charge you that fee to use it. Hope this helps... Good luck, Anne
