During the modern era, Europeans colonized most of the world, with their empires reaching the largest extent at the end of the 19th century. These empires were created for many reasons. Some were created in order to control access to spices or other rare materials. Others were created as a place to send prisoners. Most were created as part of the search for captive markets and raw materials during the second industrial revolution. In addition, many missionaries worked within empires or took the crucial first steps toward Imperialism in a location.
