Can you use newspaper to line shelves?

You can use newspaper (although preferably Sunday Comics) as temporary shelf paper if you are planning to sand or refinish the shelves. However, newspaper does not remain sanitary, and the acid in normal newsprint will cause it to fall apart in a short period of time. Black ink may also seep into the wood grain. The color comics may be printed on better grade paper, so are more suitable.
