I looked at my 2000 3.2L and the thermostat housing is under the plenum or manifold. The Haynes Manual pic shows the housing on the front of the engine as a easy fix. THE HAYNES MANUAL IS WRONG.
In addition to draining the coolant, you will have to take off the Air Cleaner, fuel injectors, all connecting hoses and cables (the ones pinched up against the firewall are a mutha), and the 8-10 bolts holding down the manifold before you can even see the T-housing bolts.
Now if you are a really good mechanic (I'm not but have seen this done) you can leave most of the aforemention parts attached, take out the manifold bolts, pry up the housing up and hold it with a 2x4. Stick you hand in there, using the brail method to find/remove the 4 housing bolts and remove the housing and thermostat. Instalation is just as fun.
