Laura's last book, These Happy Golden Years, was published in 1943.
Laura wrote a follow-up, The First Four Years, which was published in 1970, thirteen years after Laura's death, and two years after Rose died. It is heartbreaking reading. The years after Almanzo and Laura were married were marked by one tragedy after another: they lost their baby son; a house fire destroyed everything they had, drought and grasshoppers killed their crops; and diphtheria nearly killed them both, leaving Almanzo partially paralyzed.
Evidently, Rose did not have the heart or patience or strength to edit her mother's last manuscript, and it was Rose's heir, Roger Lea McBride, who had it published after Rose's death.
On The Way Home is a diary written in 1894 by Laura on the trip she, Almanzo and Rose made to the Ozarks, where they settled in Mansfield, Missouri. Rose wrote the introduction and afterWord. It was published in 1962.
