My 1994 dodge ram pickup truckkeeps backfiring and dying and you can smell gas what's wrong with it?

There are code readers for pre-96 vehicles, possibly even get free scan at auto parts store. My guess is if you smell gas, then it's running rich. It could be sensor related like O2 sensor/MAP sensor/MAF sensor along those lines. Or mechanical, like a fuel pressure regulator or loose injectors...
