Perhaps the only themes in "They're Made out of Meat" are:

  • Preconceptions are often wrong
  • Bias is inherently unfair

The two characters that discuss the meat creatures obviously have preconceived notions of what sorts of life can develop intelligence, and the meat creatures (humans) fit none of their models. They stumbled over the planet by accident, and even more by accident tripped over intelligent meat, a concept that they just cannot reconcile. Their only option then is to ignore it and hope it will go away.
