Why doesn't Sonic the Hedgehog like water?

Many are curious why this is so the creators of sonic aka SEGA didn't want the game to be too easy considering sonic's speed could be easily used to just blast through any level so they implemented that if sonic would go underwater he would 1 slow down 2 drown.
