How does Jonas keep the planes from finding him and Gabriel in the giver?

Since the planes have detectors that are heat sensitive, Jonas tranfers and tries to recall memories of coldness so that Gabe and Jonas don't set off the detectors. He also makes sure he is heavily concealed in the landscape.
