Founder, or laminitis, in horses is characterized by symptoms such as severe lameness, a reluctance to move, and shifting weight between legs to alleviate pain. The horse may exhibit a stiff gait, a noticeable pulse in the digital arteries, and a stance with the front feet stretched forward or the hindquarters shifted back. Additionally, affected horses may show signs of pain when their hooves are palpated or when standing on hard surfaces. In more severe cases, the hoof wall may become deformed, and the horse may develop an abnormal stance.
